Tibetan Clothing Culture Book Series II: Minyak Clothing

Continuing from the Drago Clothing volume, Minyak Clothing is the second installment in the Tibetan Clothing Culture Book Series. This book explores the traditional attire of the Minyak region, focusing on areas such as Dartsedo, Dawu, Gyezil, Nyarong, Dribmed, and Chakzam.

The diversity of Minyak clothing is deeply rooted in the region’s varied terrain, climate, and agricultural-pastoral lifestyles. In high-altitude pastoral areas like Lharima and Ra’le, women wear amber ornaments and floral headpieces. In mid-altitude semi-agricultural regions such as Sabdea and Gangkar Riwo, people favor brightly colored, multi-pleated Bakgo clothing, reflecting both local and broader Tibetan aesthetics. Low-altitude agricultural areas near Han and Yi communities, like Gyezil and Shebmae, show some cross-cultural influence but largely retain traditional features, with simpler accessories being typical.

For this volume, the Tibetan Plateau Clothing Research Center combined historical analysis with extensive field research to comprehensively document the traditional styles shaped by diverse local environments and cultures. Fourteen representative clothing types were selected for detailed study, based on their unique cultural features, exceptional craftsmanship, and regional significance.
