Heavenly Nectar of Advice

His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche distilled the Buddha’s vast and profound teachings into this essential heart advice, which is akin to divine nectar. Khenpo Sodargye Rinpoche offers a clear and heartfelt explanation of this brief yet deep treatise. Rather than being abstract philosophy, Khenpo Rinpoche’s teaching speaks directly to practitioners’ real struggles, revealing how authentic Dharma helps eradicate afflictive emotions and bring about both worldly well-being and ultimate liberation.

Just as divine nectar that cures every illness, the Heavenly Nectar of Advice acts as an antidote to the three poisons of desire, anger, and ignorance. The root text is structured around four vital points of the Buddhist path:

  • Relying on a qualified spiritual teacher;
  • Diligently listening to and contemplating the Dharma;
  • Maintaining pure ethical discipline; and
  • Engaging in genuine meditation practice.

This work reveals the complete path from foundational training to profound realization, making it a timeless guide for anyone seeking to transform their minds and align their lives with the path of awakening.

Regularly engage in guru yoga. Sincerely pray to receive the four empowerments of the path. Then abide in the state where the guru and your own mind are inseparable. Train in seeing all appearances as the guru: all forms as the guru’s body, all sounds as the guru’s speech, and all thoughts as the play of the guru’s wisdom. By steadily practicing in this way, you will naturally make spiritual progress, and your realization will continue to deepen.

Of all the Dharma texts you have studied, you should select one or two to practice throughout your entire life—for example, The Precious Treasury of the Basic Space of Phenomena, Yeshe Lama, Placing Buddhahood within Reach, or The Way of the Bodhisattva. This is extremely important.

Just as, without drinking water, thirst is never quenched,

Without practicing the authentic Dharma, there is no liberation.

Therefore, train in the four thoughts, refuge, bodhicitta,

The generation and completion stages, and the supreme path of Great Perfection.
