I believe that, among all Dharma teachings, preliminary practices are the most essential; completing the five hundred thousand accumulations is indispensable. Every Buddhist, including those in the Nyingma tradition, should hold themselves to this standard.
Mangala Sutta: Discourse on Blessing
In this illuminating teaching, Khenpo Sodargye presents the Mangala Sutta: Discourse on Blessing—a cherished Theravada gem that is chanted daily by many and revered for its power to bestow blessings and boundless merit, including health and happiness. The world is in need of auspiciousness, and every family and individual longs for true blessings. What are the greatest blessings in life? Drawing from the Buddha’s words, practical wisdom, and personal anecdotes, Khenpo explains that true blessings are not found in material wealth or external adornments, but rather in the choices we make each day regarding our companions, environment, speech, and conduct.
The Buddha’s answer to this timeless question unfolds through eleven verses, offering a comprehensive roadmap to genuine and lasting happiness. The first few verses focus on foundational life choices and daily conduct. We are encouraged to seek wise companions and live in environments blessed by the presence of past eminent masters. A joyful life is built on extensive learning, mastery of skills, self-discipline, and well-spoken words that benefit both ourselves and others. Fulfilling family responsibilities—honoring parents, cherishing spouse and children, and pursuing honest and harmless livelihoods—is essential. We should practice generosity toward relatives and those in need, maintain impeccable conduct, abstain from unwholesome actions, and remain steadfast in virtue. Additionally, it is vital to cultivate respect, humility, contentment, and gratitude while frequently listening to Dharma teachings.
The remaining verses emphasize inner cultivation and the path to ultimate liberation. We are advised to develop patience and compliance, and to engage in meaningful discussion about faith and liberation when meeting with monastics. Through self-restraint, pure living, and mastery of the Noble Eightfold Path, we can realize emptiness and attain nirvana in this very life. The ultimate blessing is to maintain a mind unmoved by worldly conditions, remaining free from sorrow, defilement, and all afflictions. Those who embody these teachings become invincible and abide in happiness at all times.
His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche taught that true generosity begets wealth effortlessly—just as ashes inevitably emerge from a blazing fire.
