Meditation Categories 5. Causes and Effects

41. Negative Actions of the Mind

Longchen Nyingtik Meditation 41

The Beginning

Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.

The Main Part

Meditate on that: As a result of having a covetous mind, your wishes are thwarted and everything goes wrong; moreover, many events you would rather avoid befall you.

As the result of wishing harm on others, you are constantly anxious and fearful; you feel insecure and can’t find a moment of peace in your mind.

As a result of having wrong views, you are reborn as an inferior being who derides the principle of cause and effect and holds onto the extremes of eternalism or nihilism. In addition, you will be reborn in lower realms and suffer unceasingly. There are people who, even having met an authentic teacher, still cannot rectify their mistaken views. Disparaging their teachers and the Three Jewels, they simply can’t generate a good heart but breed perverted views easily. Such a propensity, if left unchecked, will only cause sufferings in the lower realms.

Therefore, resolve: From now on, I must abandon the three negative actions of the mind. In front of my guru and the Three Jewels, I repent openly my past defilements of covetousness, ill wishes, and wrong views; I shall vow never to commit them again, and as soon as any such evil thought arises, I’ll snuff it out and confess right away.

The Ending

Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
